Getting Started is the Hardest Part

47070097 - colorful figure of a man runningIt doesn’t matter if you are starting a new business or trying something new in your business – often the getting started part is the most difficult.

What do I mean exactly?

What I’m saying is that we hold back. We stay in ‘research’ mode – you know, looking at how others are doing their marketing, their websites, their offers – all of it. We stay in a place of gathering information on how we think that we should do things.

So what is wrong with that?

Well good heavens, I don’t know about you, but the last time I did I little research – I got stuck in the thick of it. I mean just google the phrase, how to start a coaching business, and look what pops up. There are hundreds of thousands of sites that teach and give examples.

And then there is a subtle shift that occurs while we are knee-deep in research mode – we begin to compare ourselves to others that ‘appear’ successful.

womenthinkingWe start saying things like:

“I could never do that.”

“My website will never look that good.”

“Look how much her clients love her – I will never be that good.”

And the list goes on and on and on and on …

Then, instead of research mode – we are majorly stuck in procrastination mode.

Seriously, it is absolutely amazing to me how much we sabotage ourselves as business owners. Even when we have big dreams and visions – we can talk ourselves right out of taking action, because we don’t feel good enough.

But I’m here to tell you otherwise – to argue with your inner voice.

YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH!!

You are you, not anyone else – and you have gifts and services to offer this world. People are waiting for you to get out of your own way and make things happen.

Here’s a little tip to help you stop this cycle – when you find yourself doing more than an hour of research, STOP. And if that means setting an alarm so that you know to stop, do it.

Pause and take a second to pay attention to your inner voice.

What are you telling yourself?

What kind of self talk is going on in there?

Is it time for a redirect?

An hour of research is often plenty of time to gather the information you need to figure out what you like and what you don’t like. Any more than that and you will end up confused and feeling like crap.

And whatever you do – when it comes time to implement, be sure to do what FEELS good, not what you think you ‘should’ be doing.

Sometimes it can feel so tough to move out of research and into implementation.

However, know that it doesn’t need to be perfect – you can perfect it as you go. Just push yourself to take action or you will stay in limbo. Whether that means hiring someone to implement or a coach to push you – do it!

This is one of the hardest things to do in your business – and believe me it will keep popping up each time you want to change things up or step up your game – so do what you gotta do to move forward – your people are waiting for you!!

The Missing Piece in Sales for Heart and Spiritually Driven Entrepreneurs

As a heart and spiritually driven business owner, one of the toughest hurdles to jump is sales. In fact, many of us 19808787_scompletely shy away from the whole idea of sales for fear of sounding fake or forceful or worse yet – getting rejected.

Sure there are tons of sales books, courses and programs available for us to learn and master the art of sales. However, are those types of programs really geared towards our unique style of doing business?

In my former life I was a sales representative for a pharmaceutical company – yes I know I really did that.

I can still remember my first lunch and learn.

I had big ideas, I mean huge ideas, of how I was going to serve my clients. I wanted to be the best sales rep they ever had walk in the door.

So we sat down to lunch and almost as soon as my ass hit the chair – the doctor said to me, “There is no need for you to give us any information or try and sell anything to us. Let’s just enjoy our lunch.”

Um – talk about deflated.

And talk about getting inside of my head. The self talk that was happening at that moment was horrible. I wouldn’t say that stuff to my worst enemy.

Things like …

  • Why would anyone buy from you
  • You are not cut out for sales
  • You are a horrible sales representative
  • You are going to suck at this job
  • Why would you ever think that you can make a difference

Wow – seriously brutal.

So after that lunch as I walked with my tail between my legs, I went through an 8 year stint of trying to be a good, sales rep. But instead I got by.

Why am I sharing this story with you?

I think that many of us had some type of bad experience with sales. Maybe you were in sales and hated it? Maybe you got hosed by a sales person and bought something that you didn’t need? Or maybe you bought a sales program or system and when you went to apply it in your business it felt horrible and inauthentic?

Whatever the negative experience – many of us carry it with us each and every time we head into a sales conversation.

Meaning …. we get stuck in our head.

Like we go into a sales conversation with a potential new client saying things in our head like:

  • I don’t want to sound like a sleazy sales person
  • I am not good at sales, so I’m sure they won’t buy
  • What if they don’t buy – then I’m screwed
  • I’ll just give them a ton of information and help solve their problem then they will want to buy from me
  • They don’t have enough money – they said that already, so I am not going to make an offer

There is a reason why all of those “icky” sales experiences in the past got stuck in your head and why they remain there each time you put on your sales hat – it is because something about sales feels unethical, not right or misaligned to you – to your core.

For me, well I was handed a bunch of scripts and that is how I was taught to sell. Follow these scripts and answer objections like this and make sure to give a hard close.

Seriously, I have a social work degree – me and a hard close or inauthentic, robotic sales conversations don’t mix well – and don’t mix well for many heart and spiritually driven business owners.

So what should we do instead?

The key when you are having your sales calls is to have effective and ethical conversations. Seriously, it all about conversation.

And when you approach these conversations as a way to help a potential client solve a problem, everything shifts.

As heart and spiritually driven business owners, our number one goal is to help and serve others. When we get in our head and into this place of sales that feels inauthentic and down right crappy – well we fall flat. Our results suck or we end up with clients that aren’t right for us or are disappointed in their experience with us.

So – if our goal is to help … why don’t we start helping during the sales conversation?

The best possible thing we can do for this person is to focus entirely on them – if you can completely remove yourself from inside your head and turn to your heart and have the sales conversation from there, things will shift.

Imagine what it would be like for you if you enjoyed a sales conversation? Imagine what it would be like for your potential client if they enjoyed it too?

Woo Woo or Cuckoo?

So I’m curious – do you ever feel like you need to keep your inner woo woo hidden? Whether it’s in your biz, your spiritualityprofession or even your personal life, do you find yourself holding back on showing your spiritual or woo woo side because people might think you are a little cuckoo?

Of course I am saying this using the lightness of slang words. However, I’m wondering how common it is to live this way – or maybe it is just me?

I really can’t be the only one that feels that if I allow my freak flag to fly in front of my closest friends or colleagues that people might laugh in my face, can I?

I can’t be the only one that thinks everyone that is super close to me will run the other way if I come out of the spirituality closet, can I?

It’s not like I’m brand new to woo woo. It’s been a part of my life for about 10 years now. Actually, it all started when I was in pharmaceutical sales – talk about a huge inner conflict. I mean I was in this corporate world, where everything was a combination of science and cut throat sales. And here I was moving towards spirituality and woo woo.

To say there was turmoil on my end would be an understatement.

So when the time came and the company downsized, I was finally free to fully embrace my spirituality and shout it from the roof tops. However, it sounded all fine and dandy – but many years later I still find myself holding back.

Sure I’ve come a long way – I mean a loooooonnnnnngggggg way. However, there is still work to be done. I know that I’ve only tapped the surface of my inner woo woo. And I’m excited to explore what happens when I dig deeper – and more importantly allow myself to dig deeper.

So my question for you to ponder is – do you hold back from sharing all of you and who you are with those that surround you? Do you find that you don’t want to look weak or cuckoo if people get a glimpse of the real you?

If you are answering yes to either of these questions, what would it be like if you let down your guard just a little? What would it be like to know that you are not alone, that you have support?

The key to connection and relationships – whether personal or business – is realness.

That doesn’t mean we need to agree with one another. It means we need to feel Connected. Heard. Respected.

And if the people that are the closest to you can’t offer those and allow you to be you – maybe it is time to look at who you surround yourself with on a regular basis.

Just some things to ponder on this blustery winter day in PA.

Thoughts? Are you out of the spirituality closet? Do you feel like you have a foot in two different worlds?

I’d love to hear about your story and where you are right now – comment below 🙂

A Square Peg. A Round Hole. A Business.

Recently, I had a client contact me that was looking for help with her social media marketing. She was scared about putting herself out there – especially on Facebook and was looking for guidance and support.business style

Her main complaint and worry – She felt like FB just wasn’t for her. However, because her ideal clients were there, she made it part of her business plan. (She is a healer and a ton of her people are on FB, especially in a few groups).

Oh and by the way – if you are a healer or other type of heart and soul centered biz owner, it is not unusual for you to really dislike FB and social media. Whether it is too much negative energy or “small talk” – it can feel like a drag – unless you change it up a bit!!

But I digress …

Anyway, why was this particular client having such a hard time with social media? Well she was trying to fit into everyone other person’s mold. You know the whole square peg in a round hole thing.

She was trying to do everything like she was taught or like she observed others doing.

Sure I could have added to her frustration by giving her “to do” steps like posting this many times a day or doing this in FB groups or creating FB ads…

However, this wasn’t at all what she needed.

Time and time again I see biz owners, especially healers and coaches spend time on social media doing exactly like what everyone else does. And for some people this will work – especially if your biz style is a Guru Star doing what other Guru Stars are doing (find out your biz style here: http://gretchenpritts.com/kit/).

But …

For the rest of us, well this copycat step by step solution model leads to frustration, burnout and eventually tossing in the towel.

The thing is, it is easy to learn the skills – regardless if those skills are social media, time management, networking – whatever business skills you want to learn, the skills are the easy part. However, unless you take the time to really understand the why behind the skills – your why – you are most likely going to be disappointed in your results and experience.

So what did we do …

We created a new mold – just for her. One that was uniquely hers. One that felt really great to her, was in alignment with her business and was easy to follow.

And what happened …

Well the last I talked to her, she was absolutely loving FB. She was enjoying her time there making some fantastic biz relationships and connecting with her ideal clients daily.

Lol, when we had our last conversation she told me I was the social media whisperer –

I had a big chuckle with that one.

In all seriousness, it doesn’t matter what piece of your biz that you are working on, if you aren’t doing it as you, in your mold, it isn’t going to fit. Sure it may work, but it just won’t feel right.

Go to the feeling – that is the sustaining piece. The piece where everything feels aligned and makes you want to keep going.

Create your mold first – in any part of your business (and seriously don’t be stingy with your demands – know what you want that mold to look and feel like).

Then, have fun putting the pieces of your biz into that mold!! Remember, if it doesn’t fit – adjust and tweak until the fit is a perfect match!!

What part of your biz isn’t fitting into the mold? Leave a comment below and let me know!! I’d love to hear.

Until next time…

Why your biz might be draining you – and how to fix it :)

I’m not sure about you, but I’ve had a time or two when it felt like my business was completely depleting me of my energy. So the question is – is this feeling just a fleeting feeling, or is there something more going on?

Sure we all get overwhelmed with the busyness – it is just the nature of the game. However, how do you know if aligned businessthe overwhelm is tied to a particular circumstance or if there is something more happening in your biz.

Try this on for size…

When your are completely in alignment with your business, you may have times of being really busy. Whether you have a bunch of new clients rolling in or you are preparing to offer a new product or service – the work can be overwhelming. However, all of these things fuel you – they feed your soul – so while you might be physically tired, spiritually and emotionally you are fired up!

When you have an aligned business, your biz energizes you. Things just flow – they happen easily. For example, clients are attracted to you, your confidence is high, your creativity is unstoppable – this is what alignment looks like.

I don’t know about you – but when I set out to start my business, this is what I aimed for – it seems to be total bliss, right?

The thing is though – what we strive for and what actually occurs is not always reality.

Instead, you may actually find yourself either partially misaligned or totally misaligned.

What’s the difference?

Well when you are partially misaligned, you are depleted of energy, time and bandwidth. Instead of feeding your soul, your business is depleting it. You dread Monday mornings when it is time to get to business. You are uncertain about what to do next in your biz. You may even feel like you are being held back from offering what you truly want to offer in this world – because you aren’t exactly sure how to make it happen.

When you are partially misaligned, you want to keep going, you know that success can happen – you just don’t trust yourself to make the next decisions.

Then you have total misalignment…

This is when you are done – your finances are gone, your creativity is gone and you are feeling resentful of it all. When there is a total misalignment with your biz, you are ready to throw in the towel. <<<———-This is what you want to prevent!!

When we are in total misalignment, it can be difficult to come out of it (not impossible – just more work)! The key is to catch ourselves when we recognize there is something not right in our biz – when we feel like there should be something more or it shouldn’t be this hard.

See the difference?

So why does any of this matter anyway?

Creating a business that is in alignment with who we are is the key to our success. Without this alignment, we will constantly be recreating ourselves, holding ourselves back and stuck in a cycle of ups and downs.

Here’s the thing – our souls are longing for us to be happy, to be aligned. <<<——-This is where the struggle stops.

Is it time to make an adjustment? I’m curious, where do you currently see yourself on this alignment scale? Comment below and let me know!!

Until next time…

Dreaming of Winning it Big?

Recently, the Powerball is the topic of conversation in our home and with our friends. Everywhere you turn – from 8458626_ssocial media to the nightly news, everyone is talking about winning it big.

How about you? Are you having what if conversations with yourself about what you would do with all that money?

It is funny – for me the idea of winning the Powerball has allowed me to really dream BIG. And answer a lot of questions about what I would really do if money wasn’t an issue.

Some surprises have actually popped up too.

For instance – one big one is that I always thought I wanted to move away from my current small town. For the longest time our goal was to move south when our youngest graduated from high school. Of course with my big winnings, I would buy a house somewhere in the warmer climate for the winter months. But what really surprised me was that I don’t want to leave where I am.

I do really love it here.

What I envision instead is a house in the woods with loads of land – still here in Central PA – just a little different 🙂

The other part that I really thought about was what will I do with my time? Will I continue to work on my business? Or will I become a full time traveler? Or something else?

This also surprised me, especially with all the questions I’ve been asking about my biz – like what do I want to do when I grow up.

When you take money out of the equation – everything shifts. Things become much clearer.

What I discovered about myself is that I would continue my biz. However, I would immerse myself in the spiritual, healing and transformational side of it.

Hmmm…

These two big moments of clarity were pretty powerful for me.

And you know what’s even funnier – is that for both of them, I can already make them happen – so actually I am already a winner…

I can stay where I am now AND I can shift my business into whatever I’m called to shift it into.

Pretty powerful, huh?

Have you been playing with the what if questions about the Powerball? If not, I encourage you to take a few moments today to really allow yourself to play with the idea of winning hundreds of millions of dollars. Notice what comes up for you and what kind of clarity you receive about what you really want in this lifetime.

And be sure to take notice too about the judgement you may have regarding receiving millions of dollars. I don’t know about you – but I’ve heard many comments about that amount of money being disgusting or too much. If you are feeling like this – notice that feeling too. And shift your focus to the amount of GOOD you can do by receiving millions of dollars.

Seriously – it is really funny and enlightening what comes up when you allow yourself to enter this space!!

Enjoy!! And good luck!!

Oh yeah – and you gotta play to win 🙂
